Learning Assembly Sequence Plans Using Functional Models

The representation of knowledge about assembled objects is a fundamental requirement, if computer systems are used to supervise construction tasks. Depending on the complexity of the task and the characteristics of the objects forming its basis the process of modeling may be burdensome. In this paper we introduce a method to model classes of assemblies instead of individual assembled objects. Based on functional properties of the involved objects this general model is used to derive hierarchical descriptions of individual assemblies automatically. Furthermore, the model allows the generation of high level assembly sequence plans.
